What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial arts and combat sport focusing on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in Brazil in the early 20th century by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka and former prizefighter who was teaching Kodokan judo in Brazil. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique. Students can use BJJ training for self-defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi), and mixed martial arts (MMA).
Tinguinha BJJ History
Tinguinha is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) academy founded by Marcelo “Tinguinha” Mendes in San Diego, California. The academy is one of the few BJJ schools globally that offers classes for all levels of students, from beginners to professional fighters. Tinguinha’s BJJ history is one of success and innovation.
Tinguinha began training BJJ in his native Brazil in the early 1990s. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning his black belt in just four years. Tinguinha then moved to the United States, where he opened his first academy in San Diego. Tinguinha’s academy quickly became one of the most successful BJJ schools in the country.
In addition to his academics, Tinguinha has also been very successful as a competitor. He has won numerous championships at both the local and national levels. Tinguinha has also served as a coach for several professional MMA fighters, including UFC champion Tito Ortiz.
