Armbar (Guard)

Armbar (Guard)

The armbar is a powerful submission hold in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts that can be executed from the closed guard position. The closed guard is a position where the person on the bottom (the guard player) has their legs wrapped around the waist of the person on top (the passer). The closed guard is an excellent position for the guard player to set up submissions and sweep the passer.

The armbar is a joint lock that targets the elbow joint of the opponent. The goal of the armbar is to hyperextend the elbow, which can cause a lot of pain and force the opponent to tap out.

Step 1: Establishing the Closed Guard

The first step in setting up the armbar from the closed guard is to establish the closed guard. To achieve this, the guard player should sit up and place their feet on the hips of the passer. The guard player should then use their legs to pull the passer in close and wrap their legs around the waist of the passer.

Step 2: Securing the Arm

Once the closed guard is established, the next step is to secure the arm of the passer. The guard player should use their left hand to control the right arm of the passer by gripping the sleeve of the GI (uniform worn in jiu-jitsu) or the wrist. This will prevent the passer from posturing up and escaping the guard.

Step 3: Breaking the Posture

The next step is to break the posture of the passer. This can be done by using the left hand to pull the passer down and using the right hand to push the head of the passer down. This will make it more difficult for the passer to posture up and escape the guard.

Step 4: Setting up the Armbar

Once the posture of the passer is broken, the guard player can set up the armbar. The guard player should use their left hand to control the right arm of the passer and use their right hand to grip the right wrist of the passer. The guard player should then use their left leg to push the passer to the left and use their right leg to trap the right arm of the passer between the legs.

Step 5: Executing the Armbar

The final step is to execute the armbar. The guard player should use their left leg to push the passer to the left and use their right leg to trap the right arm of the passer between the legs. The guard player should then use their hips to lift the passer up and extend the elbow of the passer.

Tips

  1. Keep your elbows tight to your body while setting up the armbar; this will give you more leverage and make it harder for your opponent to escape.
  2. Keep your weight forward while executing the armbar; this will give you more power and make it harder for your opponent to escape.
  3. Keep your grip on the wrist of the opponent tight; this will give you more control and make it harder for your opponent to escape.
  4. Practice the armbar from the closed guard with a partner; this will help you get a feel for the movement and make it easier to execute in live rolling.

The armbar from the closed guard is a powerful submission hold that can be used to finish a fight or match. With the right technique, it can be a devastating move that can end the fight in seconds. Remember to practice with a partner, focus on the details, and always keep safety in mind.
