A friend invited me to attend a class at The Stronghold Eastlake Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I was very excited about it and wanted to try it out. The surface appeal of trying Jiu-jitsu was cool, but I really decided to go for more than just surface appeal — I’m all about the details. I’m always trying to find ways to better myself as a person and improve personally, professionally, and in my relationships with other people. Words like “self-awareness,” “self-confidence,” and “positive outlook” made me stop in my tracks. I realized this place is more than MMA (mixed martial arts) — it’s like a million-dollar idea wrapped in an $80 package. The initial classes were tough, but once you start understanding how Jiu-jitsu works and learning how to apply it, you’ll get hooked! It was quite literally like flying through the air while knowing your body parts were going to be landing on other people’s body parts who magically aren’t getting hurt (KOO-chee is what we call this).

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focused solely on ground fighting or grappling. It emphasizes the principles of leverage, combined with proper technique to gain a dominant position to resolve conflict using submission holds. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique and leverage. BJJ training can be used not only for self-defense but also for competition and fitness.
