Boxing, or "fighting" as it was initially known, later became a sport around which many other forms of fighting developed. Boxing is known to date back to the 1500s BC. Competitive boxing has been in existence since the late 1700s AD but only gained significant popularity in metropolitan areas during the Industrial Revolution — specifically with Jack Broughton's establishment of the London Prize Ring Rules in 1743, which were inspired by Broughton's study of ancient Greek and Roman gladiator fighting.
